Course Description:
The content of English II is an exploration of world literature; we will study culture, history, and literature in order to hone the skills of literacy, analysis, synthesis, comprehension, and organization. Because this is an English II, Pre-Advanced Placement course, everything we do in here will help to prepare you for AP Language and Composition and, inadvertently, the end-of-year test.
In an English class our two main forms of communication are listening and talking—reading and writing. Allow me to explain: a successful conversation requires active listening and is followed by an appropriate response. In the realm of literature, we listen by reading what others are saying through their writing, and we respond through discussion and writing.
There will be outside reading and writing. Expect it. If you foresee that you will not ever complete this outside work, then my class will be a major conflict for your goal to uphold a high GPA. Heads up: as a favor to you, my class will not be easy.
Extended Texts:
Cry, the Beloved Country
Night
Fahrenheit 451
Julius Caesar
The Alchemist
Siddhartha
The Kite Runner
Antigone
Animal Farm
There will be 2-3 opportunities for choice reading novels
** I maintain the right to subtract or add from this list whenever necessary.**
